János Balázs talks to Jack Pepper about exploring Rachmaninov, Hungarian gypsy music and a new piano concerto by Péter Eötvös that pays tribute to his pianist role model, György Cziffra.
At the end of the exhibition opening and lecture sessions, Janos Balazs, one of Hungary’s leading and award-winning pianists, received a standing ovation from the audience with a concert dedicated to Hegyei and another Hungarian musician, György Cziffra.
2021 was the centenary of the Hungarian pianist and composer György Cziffra, and there have been world-wide celebrations under the auspices of the György Cziffra Festival. The modern day Hungarian pianist János Balázs, who founded the festival, is determined to keep Cziffra’s memory alive and celebrate Cziffra’s art, both in organising the festival and in his own concerts and recordings.

György Cziffra war einer der bekanntesten Pianisten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er wurde am 5. November 1921 in Budapest geboren, wuchs in ärmlichen Verhältnissen auf, aber glänzte schon als Kind mit Improvisationen. Eine seiner Schwestern erkannte sein außergewöhnliches Talent, verzichtete auf eine eigene Klavierkarriere und ermöglichte György den ersten Klavierunterricht.
Budapest, 5. November 1921. Wer von den vielen, vielen Klavierartisten kann schon von sich sagen, er habe seine Karriere im Zirkus gestartet. György Cziffra konnte. Noch im Kindergartenalter trat der nämlich in die Manege, um über Melodien zu improvisieren, die das Publikum ihm zurief.

This weekend, sees the World Premiere of Peter Eötvös’ new piano concerto Cziffra Psodia. The World Premiere takes place at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall in Budapest on 5 November, which marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Georges Cziffra.
